Please read on for Mr. Beaton's message about rescheduling All County Chorus:
Plan for Rescheduling the High School All County Music Festival for 2010
FCPS has rescheduled the high school all county music festival as shown below.  The reason for delaying the orchestra to a later date is because nearly fifty percent of the members of the orchestra have scheduling conflicts for the weekend of March 12/13, which makes it impossible for the orchestra to perform.  FCPS is exploring other dates for an orchestra rehearsal and performance in April, to be announced shortly (after all orchestra members have been contacted about potential conflicts).  We are aware that individual musicians in the other ensembles have conflicts, but the overall number of conflicts is such that it is possible for the ensembles to go forward with the performances on March 13.  Sincere apologies
are extended to any students who have conflicts that do not permit their participation in this year’s performances.  The only other option would have been complete cancellation of the event for this year for all ensembles, and based upon students/parent/teacher comments, that was not a preferred option.

In addition, I have attached a flier for a performance of the Brahm's Requiem this Saturday night in Frederick.

Dear parents and students,
The Choral Boosters meeting for this evening will be cancelled.  I need to remind you about several things.  Please be selling tickets for the cabaret concert on Sunday, Feb. 21 (with a snow date of Tuesday, Feb. 23).  The pre-sale cost is less expensive than the tickets at the door.  Remember that these are due Friday the 12th (if we have school).  As of now, be prepared for Rock-a-thon to still take place on Friday evening, the 12th, from 6-11 pm.  Please remember that you can either have donations or a pledge of at least $10 to participate in this fundraiser.  Those of you who have not turned in your music for Cabaret need to do so ASAP. Be prepared to turn it in to me whenever we return to school.  Those of you participating in Solo & Ensemble, I will let you know about rescheduling when I know more information.
Please sing through your music at least once every day in order to keep it fresh in your mind so we don't have a lot of remembering to do once we return to school.  Vocal Ensemble- don't forget about Kalinda and looking over Witness.
Enjoy the snow and stay warm!
2/4/2010

Dear Parents,
Your children found out today that Friday's all day All-county rehearsal and Saturday's All County Concert have been cancelled due to the anticipated snow storm.  We will reschedule both events at a later date.  The concert will NOT be on Monday evening, Feb. 8, but will be rescheduled.  I will let you know more details as soon as I know more.
I also wanted to clarify an earlier email. Rock-a-thon will take place Friday, Feb. 12 from 6-11 pm.  I will need parent chaperones for this event.  Please let me know if your son/daughter is interested in attending but does not have a rocking chair.
2/2/2010
Students and Parents,
In case there is no school tomorrow, I will be rescheduling the TENOR sectional.  There was a sheet that said soprano sectional, but that is actually NEXT Wednesday.

All county participants, please print out the attached field trip permission slip and return that to me when we have school.  Please pay attention to the section about driving.
Remember to be selling tickets for the Cabaret concert.  Your son/daughter should have brought home the order form.  Tickets ahead of time are $8 for adults and $5 for students, while they are $10 and $6, respectively, at the door.  Pre-orders are due by Friday, Feb. 12.
Rock-a-thon: This is scheduled to take place on Friday, Feb. 12 from 6-9 pm.  Make sure that your son/daughter has a rocking chair, and gets donations or pledges for that amount of time that they rock.
If interested, feel free to view this month's Choral Director's Magazine.  You may recognize the director on page 14 of the "Choir Director's of Note" article.

Dear Students and Parents,
Please make sure to bring your Vocal Ensemble outfits BACK to school.  We need to make sure that they are presentable for the Feb. 21 concert.
Also, please check your schedules for the following Sundays:
Sunday May 2 and Sunday, May 16
This would be for a morning performance at Zion Lutheran Church.

Dear Students and Parents,
It has been a tradition for the Vocal Ensemble to perform at the churches of the seniors in Vocal Ensemble.  If you are interested in having Vocal Ensemble perform at your church, you need to contact your church about possible dates and then speak with me about picking dates that will work.
This needs to be done ASAP as we try to work around everyone's very busy schedules for the next couple of months.
Thanks!

1/27/10

Dear Parents and Students,

We have an air date for the PBS broadcast.  Tune in to Maryland Public Television on Saturday, March 6, at 6:30 pm for the Celebrate America show.  I've attached a picture of the choir from their performance at the PBS Broadcast.  Standing in the top row is Tim Jannis, who was the arranger of the song, Shenandoah, that we performed.  He will be at the station during the pledge show.  I've also attached a press release from the Tim Jannis Ensemble.

In addition, Hal Leonard Music Publishing Co. has offered to donate $500 coupons for free music to every school that participated in the program, if the schools can have 50 people donate $40 or more to the Maryland Public Broadcasting.  In exchange for your donation, you will receive a companion CD or DVD of the performance, as well a membership to Maryland Public Television.  If interested, all you need to do is call the Maryland Public Broadcasting station, and mention that your pledge goes towards Middletown High School.

I'm very proud of the students that participated in this event, and I can't wait to see the program!  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Grease: Auditions for the spring musical, Grease, will be next week Tuesday and Thursday.  I will have after school rehearsals this week to help interested students learn the audition music.  More information on dates and times to come.

Tri-M Induction: All students who turned in application forms for the Tri-M Music Honor Society should have received a response about their acceptance.  Just a reminder, the induction ceremony is next week: Wednesday, January 13, at 7 pm.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Unfortunately, with the risk of H1N1 going around, Vindabona Nursing Home has cancelled our caroling trip on December 9.  We will still be performing this Friday at Zion Lutheran Church.  The call time will be 6:15 pm.  Any students interested in caroling around the tree will have a short rehearsal after school on Friday afternoon.  The program will begin at 7:30 pm.

Just to clarify, only the Vocal Ensemble students will be singing in the Holiday Spectacular this Saturday and Sunday; however, you are all welcome to attend, as this is a fundraiser for the new sound system.

Vocal Ensemble parents, you may free up Jan. 14 on your calendar.  We will not be singing at the MLK event this year.

Thank you for your flexibility.  I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

I wanted to thank you for supporting music at Middletown High School, whether it is by attending musical functions, enrolling your child in a music class, helping with boosters, chaperoning, or many other of the wonderful things that you do.  The program would not be the same without your help and support.  Thank you!

As you enjoy your Thanksgiving this year, remember to ask family and friends if they would like to buy any Silpada jewelry, and please see me if you don't have a catalogue to buy from.

I have attached the most recent schedule of dates for the next couple months.  Please review carefully and let me know if you have any questions.

OTHER FUNDRAISERS:
In addition to the winter concert, there are several other events that the Women's choir members may take part in.  The choirs have decided to participate in the "Adopt a family" fundraiser, in which we will collect money and then buy Christmas presents for 2 different local families.  We will also be selling Silpada jewelry, which will begin next week.  Please look for fliers from your daughter at next week's rehearsal.

Thank you to all of you that participated in the Yankee Candle Fundraiser.  As in the past, this fundraiser was very successful.  We have several more fundraisers coming up, and I wanted to let you know about them so that you could plan accordingly.  First of all, your child should come home today with information about selling Catoctin Popcorn.  This fundraiser will last until November 6.  Following that fundraiser, we will once again be selling Silpada Jewelry.  This fundraiser will take place November 16-December 4.  Please keep these fundraisers in mind as you shop for holiday gifts, and remember that your child will receive a portion of the profit to go towards the cost of their trip to Kings Dominion in the spring.

I also wanted to congratulate the students on a job well done at the Maryland Public Broadcasting station.  They were well behaved, they sounded wonderful, and they were wonderful representatives of Middletown.  The air date will not be until February or March, but I will let you know more details as they are given to me.

Please remember to check the calendar available on the choir website: www.mhschorushome.org for any updates.  The next four weeks we will have the after school sectionals, which will all last from 2:30-3:30.

Kristi Robillard

Lauren Bowlin

Christine R. Roy

Patricia Morell

Linda Myers

Melissa Murphy

Please let me know if you were interested in chaperoning and your name is not on this list.  There was one parent who volunteered but forgot to put their own name on the paper, so I wasn't sure who it was.

Chaperones, please be at school between 8 and 8:15.  I will need your help with getting the robes on the busses and I will explain to you the expectations for the day.  You can check in to the front office and then come to my classroom room 403.  The students will meet us at 8:30.  Bring money for lunch, we will stop at the Owings Mills Mall Food Court.

Any questions, please let me know.

Thank you,

All-County and All-State Registration:
The deadline for registration for All-County and All-State Choruses is quickly approaching.  Your children will receive information in class tomorrow.  If they are interested in auditioning for All-County and/or All-State Chorus, they need to fill out the appropriate audition sheet and return it to me by the following dates:

All county: October 1
All-State Junior (9th grade): September 24
All State Senior (10-12 grade): October 2

I have attached the different forms.  Please review and let me know if you have any questions.

Heritage Days:
We will not be singing at the Heritage Day festival, so you do not need to keep that date open for a performance.  We will, however, be needing students to help sell snow cones as a fundraiser on that day.  Please contact me if you are interested in chaperoning during a time slot throughout the day.  Just as a reminder, that is Saturday, September 26.

Women's Choir
The Women's Ensemble will have its first rehearsal tomorrow, Tuesday the 15th, from 2:30-3:30 after school.  Any interested female student can come and see me with questions.

Thank you,

At the beginning of the year I sent home information about the Maryland Men's Chorus to be held on October 16th.  I have attached the sheet that I sent home along with more information about the event.  At this point I have a couple more spots to fill.  If your son is interested in singing on October 16, he needs to bring in a check for $10 payable to MMEA by Monday.  Please note that you are responsible for providing transportation to and from the location.

Thank you.

The Vocal Ensemble has been invited to sing at the wedding of a former Vocal Ensemble member who graduated in 2003.  The wedding will take place on Saturday, November 13.  The song they have requested would be sung during communion of the wedding.  Please check your schedules and see if your son/daughter is available on Saturday, November 14th at 2:30 pm (for a 3:30 wedding).  The wedding is at the Lutheran Church here in Middletown.  I need to give them an answer pretty quickly, so please email me back with a "yes" or a "no" if your son or daughter is available.

Thank you!

I wanted to wish a warm welcome to those new and returning to the Middletown Chorus community.  Our first informational "Meet the Director Night" will be held this coming Tuesday, September 8, at 7 pm in the chorus room (room 403).  Please come and join us, as I will explain the goals and expectations for the year.  I will discuss the upcoming performances for PBS as well as the change in concert attire this year.  Several of our Choral Booster officers will be there to meet with you and answer any questions that you may have.

Thank you for those of you who have already turned in your $10 workbook fee (made out to MHS).  The polo fee is being subsidized by the Choral Boosters and will only cost you $15 (made out to the MHS Choral Boosters).  Your son/daughter has tried on a polo at school to find the best fit.
Please feel free to contact me if you are unable to attend the meeting and have any questions.  I look forward to a musically fulfilling year!
